About This Event
Learn about the history and legacy of Victor H. Green’s travel guide for African Americans, The Negro Motorist Green Book. This program will include a screening of Smithsonian Channel™ documentary The Green Book: Guide to Freedom, followed by a discussion with Nieeta Presley about local establishments that were listed in the guide.
Published from 1936 to 1966, The Negro Motorist Green Book helped Black travelers safely navigate the United States by directing them toward businesses that did not discriminate against them. Whether traveling through the Jim Crow south or the dangerous “sundown towns” of the Midwest and West, the Green Book gave Black Americans the opportunity to travel safely, helped Black-owned businesses thrive, and advocated for civil rights.
Nieeta Presley has a wealth of experience in community building, advocacy, leadership development, and organizational management, having served as Executive Director of Aurora/St. Anthony Neighborhood Development Corporation and in leadership roles for the St. Paul Planning Commission, the St. Paul NAACP, and the Rondo Roundtable.
