Dear Sir:
Mrs. Hammerberg has requested me as she can not write English, to write you in behalf of her son, Carl John Alfred Hammerberg which the undersigned is glad to do if this action is acceptable to you.
We may state as to the young man’s past life, as requested in the blanks you mailed as follows:
Habits:--He has always resided at home, and was careful to advise his mother where he spent his evenings; he began smoking cigarettes about three years ago with his mother’s permission, and to the best of his mother’s knowledge had always abstained from alcohol and drugs.
Character:--The boy loved his home and was always king and obedient to his mother and only sister. He brought his pay checks home to his mother gave her the money she desired and out of the balance he provided himself with clothes by the use of a saving account at the Citizen State Bank

Disposition:--His disposition at home was always the best, cheery, good hearted and generous.
Associates:--His associates were for the most part the school mates of his district and also the members of the lodge of which he was a member. His mother states that to her knowledge he never attended dances as he was not able to dance, but that he did occasionally accompany the other boys to the pool halls where they were permitted.
Attitude Toward Society:--He was a member of good standing of the Good Templer Lodge of West Duluth. A prominent member of this society have expressed to the writer, their high regard and faith in the boy.
He occasionally attended the services of the SW. Finnish Lutheran Church 52nd Ave. w. and Ramsey St.
We the undersigned hereby certify that we have given the above information to Rev. A. E. Smedberg and vouch for its correctness.
