Dear Sir:
I am writing you in regard to your letter of reply dated 220cl.1971. In said letter you state that the files concerning one John Hammerberg are closed to the public due to their confidential nature. I feel I should point out that I have gotten information for my historical research on two other men convicted for the same crime as Mr. Hammeberg from the Minnesota State Prison at Stillwater. All three men were convicted of crimes connected with the 1920 Duluth Lynching incident. Moreover, from an outside source I have learned that Mr. Hammerberg died shortly after his release from prison and therefore need his date of release so I can have a reference point as to the newspaper account of his death.
I hope that this information is sufficient for you to release said information (the release date of John Hammerberg). Moreover, I wish to add that I have in my possession, and is filed at the District Court Office in Duluth, a court order signed by District Judge Patrick D. O’Brian authorizing me to use the Grand Jury investigations of the 1920 lynching, and all files connected with it.
I will await your reply.

Sincerely;
Darrel Nicholson
