My dear Sir:
I defended Henry
Stevenson (sic) who was sent down from here as one of the rioters who
participated in the lynching of the negroes last June. Stevenson (sic) is going
to want to apply for a parole as soon as his case is available, and I would be
very much obliged to you if you would advise me as to what the rules are, and
also the procedure necessary to be followed to get him out.
It seems too bad
for two reasons, that he should be in there. First, I always have believed and
still believe him innocent; second, if he were guilty, it looks a little hard
that he, out of ten or fifteen thousand should be selected to be punished; but I
did not start this letter to go into the merits of the case with you. I would,
therfor (sic), be very much obliged if you would send me such information as you
believe would assist me.
