About This Event

Join award-winning journalist Rebecca Clarren for a talk on her new book The Cost of Free Land: Jews, Lakota, and an American Inheritance, followed by a panel discussion with Cris Stainbrook of the Indian Land Tenure Foundation and Robin Doroshow of the Jewish Historical Society of the Upper Midwest.

In The Cost of Free Land, Clarren investigates the federal policies that gave her ancestors—Russian Jews fleeing oppression—land and opportunity on the South Dakota prairie, policies which came at immense cost to their Lakota neighbors. Blending investigative reporting with family history, Clarren grapples with the personal and national consequences of a legacy of dispossession, inviting us to consider our own place within this history and embrace the opportunities it offers us to seek truth and make redress in the present.

This program is presented in partnership with the Indian Land Tenure Foundation and the Jewish Historical Society of the Upper Midwest. The event is made possible by the Maurice Stans Fund.
