NAAIR In The Gallery: Weaving Through the Seasons with Naneque LaTender

Join us at the Minnesota History Center for a three-part “Artists In The Gallery” series. Watch a demonstration and participate in black ash weaving with Naneque LaTender, 2024 Native American Artist in Residence.

Naneque LaTender is a member of the Menominee Indian Tribe of Wisconsin. She is an active advocate of language and material culture revitalization. LaTender is learning traditional ways of living with her family and takes great pride in working with the youth of her community. LaTender has spent her residency researching the intricate designs and styles of weaving focusing specifically on finger woven bags, ash baskets, and woven cattails mats. Anīpahkākuahtek-ahkāēhkopenākan, means “black ash basket" in the Menominee language.

During each session, Naneque will be demonstrating how to clean and process black ash into strips for basketry. Attendees are encouraged to participate in the weaving of a community basket. Black Ash strips will be cleaned and dyed on June 12th and weaving will be demonstrated on June 19th and 26th. Registration is encouraged but not required.
