About This Event

We are partnering with The Marshall W. Alworth Planetarium for their yearly Dark Sky Caravan by hosting Darky Sky Night at Split Rock Lighthouse on August 7 from 8-11.

To celebrate our dark skies, we will start the night off with a presentation by Bob King on the Northern Lights. He will cover what causes them, their forms, and how best to view them. Bob writes for Sky & Telescope and teaches community education astronomy in Duluth. He also pens the Astro Bob blog for the Duluth News Tribune and appears on The North 103.3 and WTIP-FM. You'll frequently find him looking out the living room window checking to see if the sky is clear.

After the presentation, planetarium staff will set up telescopes for everyone to enjoy and give live tours of the night sky. If it’s cloudy, don’t worry! We will still have fun activities and digital sky tours so you can learn what to look for when it clears up.

If you have ever wanted to look up at the stars above Split Rock Lighthouse, now is your chance!

Please be sure to pack bug spray, a head lamp, and dress appropriately for the weather.
